Pando

Pando, nicknamed the “Trembling Giant,” is a unique living organism: an enormous colony of quaking aspens that are all genetically identical and connected through a single shared root system.

Located in Fishlake National Forest in southern Utah, Pando covers about 43 hectares (106 acres), weighs roughly 6,000 tons, and includes more than 40,000 genetically identical stems (or “trees”). This immense mass makes it the heaviest known living organism on Earth.

Estimated to be around 50,000 years old, Pando is also considered the oldest known living organism. It was first identified as a single organism in the 1970s, and its genetic unity was confirmed in the 1990s. Today, it is the subject of ongoing scientific research and conservation efforts.
