France: Densité 0

Since January 2018, France has been remodeling its regional institutions and has now 13 new Regions instead of 22. Their capitals are well known as they are the most populated cities. Here are for the first time, the 13 less densely populated municipalities of the 13 new French regions.

The municipality is the smallest subdivision of the French territory and France has about 35,000 of them. France alone represents half of the total number of European municipalities. It’s this French exception that makes my investigation possible: from the data of the Observatoire des Territoires, I was able to define, for each region, areas with a low population density. Then, within these zones, I determined the 13 communes with a population density of only 3 inhabitants/km² on average. It is not the size of the municipality or the number of inhabitants that drives the focus: there may be small villages but densely populated, there may be ones devoid of inhabitants but adjacent to well populated municipalities.

DENSITE 0 highlights these most isolated people who live, work and adapt to their natural environment on a daily basis, in the heart of remote landscapes.
