First Place at Siena International Photo Awards, Italy | Jana Margarete Schuler
Inland photographer Jana Margarete Schuler was awarded first place at the Siena International Photo Awards on September 27 for her series “Between Blood and Glitter”, which documents female wrestlers in Ciudad Juárez, a city long affected by high rates of femicide in Mexico.
Jana’s series captures the strength, resilience, and determination of the Luchadoras of Juárez, highlighting both the challenges and the power of women navigating a complex social landscape.
During the awards ceremony, Jana was announced as the winner in the category “Storytelling – Daily Life and Contemporary Issues”, competing against a field of highly acclaimed photographers from around the world. Reflecting on the experience, the Inland photographer expressed gratitude to the women at the heart of her story and the global photography community she connected with in Siena.
The award marks a significant recognition of Jana’s work documenting social issues with sensitivity and visual storytelling, further establishing her as a prominent voice in contemporary photography.
